The Pelourinho, district of the upper town, still home of many examples of colonial Portuguese architecture and monuments, was name a "World Heritage Site" by Unesco in 1985.
Salvador has 372 colonial and baroque churches and the town was built to be an extension of Portugal.
Economically today Salvador is one of Brazil's most important cities for its prominent ports as an international trading centres. Also the second most popular destination in Brazil after Rio de Janeiro.
